四十六集大型历史电视连续剧 

明嘉靖年间。 中国封建历史上最为独特的皇帝朱厚熜（陈宝国 饰演）出现了。他二十多年避居西苑，练道修玄，却始终牢牢掌控着整个大明朝政治、财经、军事和民生大权。 

严嵩（倪大宏 饰演），明朝历史上唯一一个二十年把持内阁的首辅，明史将其定为123臣之首。他党羽密布，权倾朝野，但是却能在家产被抄没、儿子被砍头之后，仍然独保其身，直至寿终正寝。 

海瑞（黄志忠 饰演），数百年来民间广为传颂的清官典范，敢于挑战皇权、斥责皇帝、不惧牢狱和死亡的威胁，虽地位卑微，却敢向几千年的封建制度发出震古烁今的挑战。 

《大明王朝》全剧展现的是中国封建史上商业经济十分发达、手工业作坊经济十分发达、市井文化空前繁荣的时代，也是中国封建史上商业经济与农业经济的社会矛盾空前尖锐的时代。土地兼并使得大量的农民失去了赖以生存的基础，贪墨横行使大明朝的统治濒临崩溃的边缘。全剧以“倒严”为主要线索，全面展现了这一时期的一幅幅历史画面——从朝廷到各级官府惊心动魄的政治斗争，从官场到商场波谲云诡的尔虞我诈，忠勇的官兵和忠义的百姓风起云涌的抗倭之战；国与家命运的休戚与共，敌和友关系的错综变化，大情大我和小情小我的矛盾交织在这里折射

出历史精神的伟大理想和人生命运的严酷现实。一批赫赫有名的历史人物：海瑞、嘉靖、严嵩、严世藩、徐阶、高拱、张居正、胡宗宪、戚继光、李时珍等，从历史如烟的迷雾中有血有肉地向我们清晰地走来。
